Recording Video

Recording video from your home can seem like a daunting task, but with some planning and experimenting with your setup, you can get good quality video. This guide will provide you with tips and tricks on how to film videos at home. 

Depending on what you’re teaching or speaking about, your videos might have different setups. To teach learners how to code or use software, you might screen record and capture your voice only. You can also just film yourself giving a lecture. An instructional designer will work with you to determine the best approach for your content.

There are things to consider before, during, and after recording your video and/or audio remotely:

  • Schedule an Audio/Video Consult
  • Prepare your presentation
    • Learning objectives, presentation objectives, etc. What is the video going to cover?
    • Keep it short 5 to 15 min
    • Get your script or notes ready either on a document or presentation file
  • Set-up your recording area
  • Capture your sound
  • Set-up your lighting
  • Run a test and receive feedback
  • Get yourself ready
  • Upload your file to the shared drive folder, whether it is on Google Drive, Box, SharePoint, or even Basecamp (your contact will tell you where to upload the file(s))

  • Record locally to your computer for the best results and upload the file to us via Google Drive
  • Open up Zoom, click Record, select locally
  • File will be located here usually will depend on your setup C:\Users\krist\OneDrive\Documents\Zoom
  • Quality is generally good, but depends on bandwidth
  • Conversations, interviews

AggieVideo / Kaltura Capture

  • High quality, uploads to AggieVideo (bypasses global restrictions that YouTube has)
  • Playback is adjustable (user can decide to make webcam or screen large and adjust positions of both)
  • You must have UCD email address to use
  • Ask for assistance videos on your computer
  • Screen recording with webcam - either slides or demonstrations
  • Great option for self-service recording by instructors… you can  just post the link or embed the video in Canvas
