Recording Audio Checklist

  • Record in high resolution .WAV format (not MP3). At least 48kHz/16-bit
  • Place your microphone close (approximately 8”), but not too close as it can create distortion from plosives. Headphone mics should be moved to the side of the face, not directly in front of the mouth (might need demos of positioning different kinds of microphones).
  • Set healthy recording volume around ¾ up. Leave headroom to avoid overs (clipping).
  • Disable noise reduction while recording.
  • Listen for background noise such as:
    • Fans, heaters, air conditioners, TV’s, other appliances
    • Traffic - try another room or time if heavy
    • Silence phone and computer notifications, Airplane mode”
    • Pets - remove noisy toys and collars
    • Children - record during naps, and quiet play
    • Close doors and windows, wait for outside sounds to go away
  • Record 10 seconds of room silence. This can be used to remove noise later.
  • Drink water while you record to avoid dry lips.
  • Do not record when you’re sick. People can hear constant sniffing.
  • Do not play with pens, bottle tops etc.
