Digital Divide
The digital divide refers to the growing gap between underprivileged members of society, especially the poor, rural, elderly, and handicapped portion of the population who do not have access to computers or the internet; and the wealthy, middle-class, and young Americans living in urban and suburban areas who have access.
When designing online courses, it is important to consider whether your students will have access to computers, the internet, webcams, and other hardware that may be required for a meaningful online learning experience. The good news is that most learners have access to a smart phone. Both Canvas and Zoom feature robust mobile apps that will allow learners to participate and access course materials. With a little planning and forethought, you will be able to mitigate any access issues.
